______________________________________________________________________________ UNIX: "Last logged in..." record is unique for each machine Q. I know about .plan and .office files but why doesn't my finger info reflect when I last logged in? I am a slip user but I do telnet over to coho.halcyon.com occasionaly and I assumed that that would update it. A. We currently have three UNIX machines that you can log into: halcyon coho chinook Each of these machines keeps track of when you've logged onto it...not when you've logged on to the others. So if you finger your login name on halcyon: halcyon_61> finger leo . . . Login name: leo In real life: Leo N. Schowengerdt Office: IV Directory: /j/leo Shell: /bin/csh Never logged in. No Plan. ...it looks like you've never logged in -- because you haven't logged in to halcyon. But if you run the finger command on coho, the results look different: halcyon_62> rsh coho finger leo Login name: leo In real life: Leo N. Schowengerdt Office: IV Directory: /j/leo Shell: /bin/csh Last login Wed Oct 26 17:39 on ttyq3 from blv-pm2-ip13.hal No Plan. You'll also notice in the second example that "Office" is listed as "IV"; that's because your name is listed in the password file as: leo:HhHKQstJ3yJik:7597:100:Leo N. Schowengerdt, IV:/j/leo:/bin/csh Note the comma in the fifth field, the Real Name field. The comma is used to separate the various items that you can put in your Real Name field; for example, look at mine: mjt:2k6FF9LEvMSYo:3990:100:Michael - Tech Support,,206.455.3505,:/j/mjt:/bin/csh Then compare it to what it produces when you type "finger mjt": Login name: mjt In real life: Michael - Tech Support Phone: 206.455.3505 Directory: /j/mjt Shell: /bin/csh On since Oct 26 20:53:52 on ttypf from deadhead.halcyon 11 minutes Idle Time No Plan. So, how do you change your finger entry so that, say, it doesn't include the errant comma? At the shell prompt, type: chfn ...and follow the prompts.
