___________________________________________________________________________ Chameleon: Setting up Chameleon Sampler for use w/ Northwest Nexus Q. I'm trying to use Chameleon to connect to the Internet. The book says I need to ask my provider to supply some information. Can you tell me what I need to know? A. If you're using the Chameleon Sampler that comes with _The Internet Starter Kit for Windows_ (first edition), set it up by following the instructions on p. 563. If you have the second edition, which lacks specific instructions for Northwest Nexus, read on. If you've received the Chameleon Sampler through some other book or offer and you have access to the Internet, get the following files via FTP: If you don't have alternate access to the Internet, you can try configuring Chameleon Sampler using the information below and the instructions that came with the book you bought it with. SLIP.INI is reproduced at the end of this message; you'll need that to enable Chameleon to parse the server-assigned IP address you're given each time you log in to your SLIP account. Put both in the c:\netmanag directory. In Custom, use File | Open to select nwnexus.cfg. If you have Internet Chameleon or Workgroup Chameleon, you may be able to use the configuration file as well. You can also send mail or call and ask for our Chameleon Configuration Guide which will provide a few tips. You could also first install Chameleon Sampler as above, *then* install full Chameleon; this sometimes works well, but fails other times. Because Northwest Nexus is an Internet provider but not a software developer, we can't provide detailed consulting on getting your software up and running. We do try to share what our users tell us and what we know from our own experience, but NetManage is the place to go for software support. You can reach them at (408) 973-7171, or by e-mail at support@netmanage.com. ___________________________________________________________________________ Northwest Nexus SLIP and PPP Information o All our SLIP and PPP accounts are set up by default to use Header Compression. This means you should select "CSLIP" or "Van Jacobsen CSLIP Compression if you're using SLIP. o Personal SLIP and PPP accounts do not have pre-assigned IP addresses; our server assigns you an address from a pool each time you log in. Chameleon must parse the assigned address; that's what the SLIP.INI file tells it how to do. o PPP eliminates the need to parse anything; your Chameleon software and our PPP server converse and set themselves up automatically. If you choose the "PAP" option, even the login will happen automatically.
